Sophomore comes to aid

Staff writer

One of the few people braving single-digit conditions Monday and Tuesday was Marion High School sophomore Cooper Jirak.

Jirak posted on social media Saturday asking whether anyone needed a driveway or storefront cleared.

After the snowstorm, he received more than 20 responses.

Monday morning, Jirak could be spotted rolling his personal snowblower along Main St.

“I started about right shoveling snow,” he said. “Five o’clock, four, I’ll probably be done.”

Jirak mentioned Christianson Real Estate, Marion National Bank, and Signatures Salon as businesses he had received calls to shovel.

“I got at least eight more,” Jirak said on Monday. “And I get calls while I’m working.”

While he said he was getting paid for the work, it was impressive how many places he had agreed to shovel in such brutal weather.

“I just love helping my community out,” he said.

Asked whether he was a fan of snow, Jirak remained stoic.

“Not really,” he said. “But it has to come down at some point.”

Was he not cold in the freezing conditions?

“I get pretty warm moving around,” he said with a smile.
