Tough week for county girls

Staff writers

Hillsboro

Hillsboro lost Friday night against Hesston, 39-30.

“I felt like we played really hard and gave good effort,” coach Micah Ratzlaff said. “Hesston had too much fire power for us down the stretch.

“Defensively we kept them well below their average, but we couldn’t put enough points on the scoreboard to get the win.”

Hillsboro will be host for its own tournament this week, with the final games being played Saturday in Hillsboro.

Marion

The Warriors were unable to win their homecoming game Friday night, losing 69-23 to Inman.

“Inman is a strong team and their style of play really disrupted everything we tried to do,” coach Jason Hett said.

Scout Redger led the Warriors with eight points and four rebounds. Taryn Kraus scored five with four rebounds. Shaliah Ensley scored three.

“I did feel like our group battled in the first half and played hard,” Hett said. “We just gave them to many extra possessions off of our turnovers.

“We will learn from it and continue to work to get better and stronger as we make this push through January.”

The Warriors will be participating in the Centre Classic through Saturday this week.

Goessel

The Canton-Galva Eagles secured an overtime victory Friday.

The Bluebirds fell behind 6-0 and used the whole first and second quarter trying to erase the deficit. A basket by Aimee Funk tied the game at 18-18 going into halftime break.

Goessel shot 14 free-throws in the first half and went to the charity stripe only twice in the second half.

Goessel trailed 28-27 at the end of three quarters but led 35-28 with four minutes to play.

Aggressive play by the Eagles allowed Canton-Galva to tie the game, 37-37, in the last minute of regulation.

The Eagles scored first in overtime but missed four free-throws, giving the Bluebirds opportunities, but Goessel did not score in overtime, and Canton-Galva won by a final score of 42-37.

“Friday’s game was a hard fought battle both ways, offensively and defensively just as we thought it would be,” coach Ryan Hoopes said. “Our teams are pretty evenly matched.”.

Aimee Funk led the Bluebirds with 19 points, followed by Abbigail Funk’s 7 and Delaney Duerksen’s 6.

Goessel (3-5) will play Friday and Saturday as the Centre tournament progresses.

Centre

Centre lost 41-17 to Elyria Christian at home Friday night,

“We struggled to keep up the momentum in the second quarter when our shooting went extremely cold and we got beat several times in transition,” coach Alan Stahlecker said.

Olivia Carson led the team with seven points along with three steals and six blocks. Hailey Barton scored five.

“We struggled with shooting all night as we had a season low of 12.5% from the field and 36.8% from the free throw line,” Stahlecker said. “That half court defense was solid on Friday, but we struggled in transition, and Elyria took advantage of that.”

The Cougars will be hosts for their own Centre Classic this week Thursday through Saturday.
