Hillsboro High’s softball team is big and young, so longtime coach Stephanie Sinclair is seizing the opportunity to try something new this year.
Only Tuesday Wiesbeck and Dani Klein are returning as seniors.
The remainder of the 21 out this season are mostly underclassmen, which has spurred Sinclair to split the team by adding a junior varsity.
“Once you have a lot of girls out there, you are not able to work with everybody,” she said. “We have never had a JV before.”
She will try to divide the team so junior varsity will be able to get some varsity experience on the road.
This will be tough because of travel restrictions that are still in place, she said.
She still has great ambitions for this year’s team, expecting the girl’s to be competitive every night they play.
“I see us reasonably coming close to winning at least 75 percent of our games or being close in all of them,” she said. “I would like to see these kids make it to state.”
She will rely on Klein and Wiesbeck to be good leaders for younger members.
Klein brings a wealth of knowledge about the game to the table. Wiesbeck was named to All-League every year since she was a freshman.
Peabody High’s Skylre Stucky has a lot of potential to do good things this year along with Kori Arnold, she said.
The Trojans will face Halstead at 4 p.m. April 9 at home.
