Woman seriously hurt in camper blast

Sheridan Hiebert, 45, whose camper exploded and burst into flames just after noon Friday on the edge of Burns was airlifted to a Wichita hospital.
An ambulance and firefighters from Butler County, Marion ambulance, an EagleMed helicopter, and Burns and Potwin firefighters all responded to what was reported as a serious injury in a camper that exploded and burst into flames on the county line near 10th Rd. and Washington Ave. in Burns.
Butler and Marion County sheriff’s deputies and a fire marshal also responded to the scene.
EagleMed and the Butler County ambulance took responsibility for the patient.
A neighbor who called in the explosion was in Butler County, so the first departments to respond were from there, said Marion County emergency director Marcy Hostetler.
When Burns firefighters arrived, they realized the explosion was just inside Marion County.
“By the time I got on scene, the fire was already out,” Hostetler said. “The state fire marshal was already en route.”
Since there was not a hazardous materials spill, Hostetler left.
No information on whether she was living in the camper or simply staying there was available.
“When trailers have fires, those go up pretty quickly,” Hostetler said. “It’s not one of those things where they last a couple hours. There was dry grass all around it.”
